We’ve been wondering the fate of the American Apparel line ever since the company sold to Montreal-based Gildan Activewear. According to the Los Angeles Business Journal, we have a more concrete answer.
Starting Aug. 14, Gildan Activewear will sell American Apparel’s clothing items through its former e-commerce site. Prior to this, the brand’s clothing items were only available via wholesale, since all 110 of its retail stores closed earlier this year.
“With a new and improved supply chain, we will be incorporating our classic style with consistent sizing across all garments for women and men at a more affordable price point,” Gildan said in a statement.
Now the only thing that’s still up in the air is whether or not those clothes will continue to be made in the U.S. Since Gildan did not take over the majority of the leases for the U.S. manufacturing facilities, it’s looking like the clothes will probably be made elsewhere.
The news of the e-commerce option does not come as a huge surprise, since Gildan CEO Glenn Charmandy told Bloomberg back in May that the company would give shoppers the option to buy American Apparel goods online for a higher price.
No word yet on the official price points of all the items, but it will be interesting to see if shoppers are willing to pay a premium for their favorite classics.
