BIC Graphic’s New CEO Is An Industry Outsider, Which Makes Him a Smart Choice

BIC Graphic North America, Clearwater, Fla., announced yesterday that it has appointed David A. Klatt Jr. as CEO, effective immediately.

Klatt is somewhat of an outsider to the promotional products industry, most recently serving as the CEO of AAMP Global, a Clearwater-based manufacturer of aftermarket automotive parts and original equipment manufacturer technology.

Not completely foreign to the promotional industry, he also was the president of Newell Brands’ writing segment and specialty business segment. This job included the company’s promotional products, as he managed its big-name brands, such as Sharpie, Paper Mate, uni-ball, Waterman, Parker and Expo. He’s also served in leadership roles at Black & Decker and DeWalt.

The progression to BIC Graphic might not make the most sense on paper, but given BIC’s current goals, it’s actually a smart move for all parties involved.

“This is an exciting time to join such a dynamic organization and industry,” Klatt said in a press release. “BIC Graphic is clearly an industry leader, rooted in operational excellence and committed to its employees. They have made significant investments in service, innovation and technology, and are well positioned for accelerated growth. I look forward to helping drive the business forward, collaboratively bringing new energy to our culture, strategy to the organization and innovation to our customers.”

Emmanuel Bruno, who was promoted to president in September following the company’s sale to H.I.G. Capital, will remain in his current position.

“We welcome David and continue to push BIC Graphic forward—faster,” Bruno said. “We are dedicated to making it easier to do business with us, and will continue to evolve our business according to our distributors’ needs for a truly valued partner.”

While at first the appointment of Kratt could seem out of left field, given his lack of direct experience at the helm of a promotional products company, it makes sense for BIC Graphic. The supplier has started focusing heavily on retail-inspired product lines, such as electronics, smartphone accessories and sports equipment in addition to its traditional product offerings of writing instruments.

“In an industry as diverse as promotional products, we are pleased to have someone on board that shares our singular vision of growth and speed,” Camilo Horvilleur, managing director of H.I.G. Capital, said. “David’s proven expertise and passion for delivering customer value and organizational growth will strengthen BIC Graphic’s position as a top promotional products supplier.”

Klatt’s track record at DeWalt, where, according to BIC, he “led the consumer group’s transformation of its Power Tools business,” likely was a major draw for BIC, as it looks to continue a bit of a transformation itself into a go-to supplier for products for any product category.
