A Look at Tiger Woods’ New Sun Day Red Golf Brand

After a quarter of a century with Nike, Tiger Woods is partnering with TaylorMade Golf for his own brand: Sun Day Red.

It’s a play on the fact that Tiger would always wear red in the final rounds of tournaments. His mother always told him red was his power color, and it’s hard to argue with the results over Woods’ iconic career (which still isn’t over).

Being one of the biggest, if not the biggest, names in golf, it’s worthwhile to look at how Woods’ new brand stacks up against the other big companies in golf, and could indicate what buyers will be looking for in the future. There’s also always the chance that Sun Day Red does co-branded merchandise like many of the other major companies in golf.

The logo, first of all, is an obvious play on the name “Tiger” with 15 stripes to represent his 15 major championships. According to the AP, Sun Day Red will even change the logo should he win another. That’s pretty cool. You don’t see too many companies coming out saying, “Here’s the logo, but that will likely change. We hope it will change, at least.”

Onto the actual products, the items like apparel and golf equipment use the black-and-red color scheme heavily, and keep things pretty basic rather than going in the direction of the kookier golf apparel designs.

Some designs use small details rather than overt design features, too, which keep an understated and classy look for the golf course and beyond.

The footwear, though, has that modern sneaker look that a lot of golf companies are going with. That might be partially due to the fact that Woods was an early proponent of the athletic look of golf apparel, rather than the classic “dressiness” of it all, opting for apparel that bridged the gap between golf and sports like baseball and beyond.

Woods debuted the gear in action at the Genesis Invitational this week, with his Sun Day Red tiger peeking out tastefully.

It’s not every day that arguably the biggest name in a culture introduces something new that could shake up the entire industry. But, with Sun Day Red, there’s a familiar face but a new name entering the highly competitive golf merchandise world, and the promotional products industry is always nearby.
