MetaWare, a Fairfax, Virginia-based apparel business started by Marci Zaroff and Cas Shiver, uses seaweed-based inks in T-shirts.
The seaweed-based ink, called SeaInk, uses a seaweed-derived base without the use of chemicals, like PVC, resins or binders.
According to Ecouterre, seaweed-based inks not only have environmental benefits, they could also help keep shirts looking fresh for longer. Because of the dye’s low-impact binding to the fiber at a molecular level, the imprinted design is less likely to crack or peel when washed.
Shiver originally developed SeaInk while working with Imagine GreenWear, Fairfax, Va. Now, the production at MetaWear is Global Organic Textile Standard-certified, Made in U.S.-certified and Cradle to Cradle-certified.
