Geiger’s Green Carbon Neutral Initiative Reaches New Milestone

Geiger, Lewiston, Maine, two years ago entered into a contractual carbon neutral program with UPS, becoming the first promotional products industry company to do so. Since then, Geiger has shipped 14,094 lbs worth of packages. The total Geiger UPS CO2 emissions were 2270.74 metric tons. This amount was offset through the purchase of carbon neutral credits.

Through the program, UPS calculates carbon emissions for UPS shipments leaving the Geiger facility, then purchases and retires offsets equaling that amount. Offset projects include reforestation, renewable energy (wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric), methane and landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment and destruction of industrial pollutants.

For added credibility, these projects are carefully chosen by UPS to ensure that they meet international standards. UPS’s carbon calculation methodology and processes are certified by The CarbonNeutral Company and verified by Societe’ Generale de Surveillance (SGS).

“Sustainability is a top improvement priority for Geiger,” said Jo-an Lantz, MAS, chief operating officer for Geiger. “We continue to be pleased to support our sustainability initiative by purchasing this carbon offset for our shipments.”
