After a big push to increase its environmentally friendly business practices and break into more “green markets” such as organic cotton, New York-based Anvil Knitwear has been named one of the top ten global barnds and retailers using organic cotton.
According to the Organic Cotton Market Report 2007-2008 released by the nonprofit organization Organic Exchange Global retail sales of organic cotton apparel and home textile products reached an estimated $3.2 billion in 2008. This represents a 63 percent increase from the $1.9 billion market in 2007. For Anvil Knitwear, this means the company is well-positioned to be part of a global trend. The company is listed among some of the most recognized retailers in the world, including Wal-Mart, Nike and Pottery Barn.
Despite the global retail outlook, most brands and retailers selling organic cotton products remain committed to their sustainability plans and and upbeat about market growth with plans to expand their product lines. At the current rate of growth, the market is estimated to reach $4 billion in 2009, and $5.3 billion in 2010.
“It is a sign of the times that despite ominous financial forecasts, brands and retailers are standing fast to their commitment to making their product lines more sustainable by ever-increasing their use of organic cotton and other organic fibers such as wool, linen and silk,” said LaRhea Pepper, senior director at Organic Exchange.
