Ordinarily, we’re the first to fall prey to a two-for-one marketing tactic (hence why our cupboards are unnecessarily full of Spam). But even we can’t wrap our heads around Balenciaga’s latest double T-shirt marketing ploy, and it seems the internet agrees with our discontent.
The high-fashion brand unveiled its new T-shirt shirt, which is essentially a T-shirt with a dress shirt attached to the front. (Insert shirt-ception joke here.) Even crazier than the fashion idea itself is the price tag—the T-shirt shirt sells for $1,290. And the dressier version, the double shirt (a short sleeve button-down shirt with a long sleeve button down shirt attached), sells for $1,490.
Perhaps the double shirt will go the way of Juicy Couture tracksuits: a trend that was initially mocked, but one that rapidly took off. However, we can guarantee that if we ever saw one of these “dress shirts” in one of our boardroom meetings, we would have a difficult time keeping a straight face.
The internet did what it always does, and put the brand in its place:

Hey @BALENCIAGA,
I just made my own Double Shirt and it didn't cost thousands of dollars! pic.twitter.com/8daWqAGy7C

Here’s our personal favorite:

These T-shirts are almost as ridiculous as Nordstrom’s $425 muddy jeans, but the price tag puts them in a league of their own. With high fashion taking insane trend gambles lately, we have to wonder what’s next. We’re hoping to see Bearskin Hats hit the runway for Winter 2019.
What do you think of Balenciaga’s double shirt trend? Could this ever make its way to the promotional apparel world?
