Chicago Cubs Find and Reward Young Fan Who Wore Homemade Shirt to Game

Many people harp on the perception that children spend too much time with devices and not enough with arts and crafts. This month, though, has given us two ways to clap back against that stance. The Tennessee Volunteers provided the initial instance through their acknowledgment of a young fan’s homemade shirt, and the Chicago Cubs will soon follow thanks to another homemade T-shirt from a young supporter.

The latter apparel moment occurred on Sunday, with the Cubbies, regulars around these parts, tweeting two days later that they wanted to know the identity of a boy donning a makeshift Nico Hoerner jersey. Hoerner, a rookie, has played a considerable role in the team’s postseason push since his Sept. 9 debut, and the youth displayed his immediate affinity for the shortstop through the homemade shirt. Given that Hoerner’s tenure with the Cubs is not even two full weeks old, the franchise likely has not issued any official Hoerner merch for purchase, so the youngster’s ingenuity deserves major kudos, and the Cubs are going to give it.

Not even six hours after the Cubs had posted a picture of the then-mystery innovator, they learned his identity through his father, who made them aware that the tweet had captured diehard fan Sebastian in the homemade shirt. Yesterday afternoon, the contenders caught wind of the reply and responded with “Amazing! We’ll be in touch soon.” Here’s hoping that they acknowledge him soon and young sports fans across the country even more cause to laud their athletic heroes through a homemade shirt.

While we love branded and licensed gear, there is something to be said for breaking out crayons and markers to show our admiration. Since our drawing skills are mainly good for stick-figure representations, we commend the Volunteers fan and Sebastian for going the homemade shirt route and wonder if they are available to provide tips before they explode as promo products advocates.
