Baseball fans are probably familiar with the Cleveland Indians’ Chief Wahoo logo. However, according to Fox Sports, Indians owner Paul Dolan has confirmed that the team will no longer use the Chief Wahoo logo as its primary logo.
“We have gone to the block ‘C’ as our primary mark,” Dolan said. “Clearly we are using it more heavily than we are [using] the Chief Wahoo logo.’
This is the latest step in the team’s decision to scale back the use of the logo over the past few years. Dolan also said the team has no plans to remove the logo, entirely, as it’s part of the team’s history.
There has been pressure in recent years to remove the logo because of its insensitivity to Native Americans.
“We do have empathy for those who take issue with it,” said Dolan. “We have minimized the use of it and we’ll continue to do what we think is appropriate.”
The logo still will be part of the Indians uniform, and team apparel with Chief Wahoo still remains a top-seller for merchandise. For now, Chief Wahoo will remain a secondary logo for the Cleveland Indians.
