At its 25th anniversary gala, the Maine Institute for Family-Owned Business recognized Geiger with its Environmental Leadership Award.
Saying that Geiger was far and away the leader in its category, the judges noted and praised the company’s 100 percent carbon neutral shipping and its offsetting paper usage by planting trees. As part of its 2017 headquarters overhaul, it installed 696 solar panels, the largest business array in the state, which generate 100 percent of its annual electricity usage.
Solar power eliminates approximately 320,000 pounds of carbon emissions. UPS-certified Geiger mitigated 2,514,724 lb. of carbon emissions in 2018. Those savings will continue—and grow—year after year.
“As a family-owned company we can be concerned about more than earning profits,” Gene Geiger, board chair, noted in his acceptance remarks. “We have a responsibility to our community and our planet. We are committed to sustainable practices. At the same time, we have to do more. We all have to do more.”
Headquartered in Lewiston, Maine, Geiger is the largest family-owned-and-managed promotional products distributor in the world.
