After Donald Trump got his official mugshot after turning himself in to authorities in Georgia, the Trump campaign turned it into a merchandising opportunity immediately, selling it on T-shirts and other products as a way to stir up support from the base.
But, politics extends beyond just the debates and legislative bodies of government. Plenty of musicians and bands have made political statements part of their work, and one band famous for an album called “American Idiot,” among others, is using the Trump mugshot for merchandise, too.
While Green Day could’ve used “American Idiot” for this, it ignored the lower-hanging fruit, instead using a design motif from its 1997 album “Nimrod,” with a yellow circle with the album title over Trump’s photo, just like on the anonymous guys on the album cover.
🚨🚨 You have until 12am ET to grab the Ultimate Nimrod 45 tee 🚨🚨 we extended the deadline a few more hours due to popular demand, but once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. Proceeds will be donated to Greater Good Music to help those affected by the Maui wildfires.… pic.twitter.com/DyuF2MVHYY

The Oakland band released the shirt in limited quantities, knowing that this moment won’t have value for apparel forever, and plans to use proceeds to benefit recovery efforts in Maui following the devastating wildfires.
The members of Green Day have been outspoken with their political messages, most notably during the George W. Bush years, but also during the Trump administration.
This is an example of how non-political entities can use something like politics for its own merchandise and make it make sense, and also just take pop culture moments to make a timely promo. Tying in a good cause makes it even more appealing for fans.
