VF Corporation, the umbrella company of Vans, The North Face, Timberland, Wrangler and Lee, has announced a new sustainable materials policy, according to Mens Journal. The Forest-Derived Materials Policy enacts formal guidelines for sourcing product from sustainable forest materials.
“Deforestation and forest degradation continues to be a global issue affecting climate change and human rights,” Letitia Webster, VF’s vice president of global corporate sustainability, said in a press release, according to Men’s Journal. “This policy provides clear guidance across our many purchasing categories and it enables us to play our part in protecting the world’s forests.”
In other words, the policy dictates that VF should not source any products associated with deforestation and degradation of forestland. Additionally, a clause in the policy states that VF will use recycled fibers whenever possible in its products.
Sustainability, eco-friendly initiatives and green policies are gaining traction in the apparel industry. Last year, Adidas created a shoe from recycled ocean plastic. Even promotional apparel brands, like Royal Apparel, have stepped up their eco-friendly offerings.
