My friends and I make it a habit to go out to dinner every Tuesday night. Apart from the normal catching up and reminiscing, our recent television show obsessions always make their way into conversation. Most of the time I am out of the loop, but I nod my head and pretend to know exactly what happened in last week’s episode of The Walking Dead (Spoiler Alert: There are zombies). This past Tuesday, the TV buzz for the evening was Downton Abbey and as Professor McGonagall’s self-proclaimed biggest fan, I was embarrassed to say I hadn’t seen one episode.
After dinner I powered up my PlayStation 3 (aka the Netflix machine) and watched the first season. The drama, the British accents, the McGonagall—I was hooked. I’m unfamiliar with fashion trends that predate the 20th century, but I became enamored by the clothes and accessories worn on the show. I wanted everything, and after talking to my friends I realized I wasn’t the only one. Floral patterns, lace, length, pins, embellishments and extravagance are all making their way into the fashion world via Maggie Smith and her counterparts.
