Although Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday isn’t until April 21, that’s no reason why the Royal Collection Trust (RCT), a department of the Royal Household, can’t start selling commemorative china for a hefty price tag, according to The Independent.
The souvenirs are set to feature flowers and the Queen’s coat of arms, and will be made from hand in Britain with 22-karat burnished gold. The collection features everything from a plate for 89 pounds (approximately $124) to a mug for 25 pounds (approximately ($35).
Royal retail sales have seen a 19 percent drop over the past couple years, which might explain the early push for selling the souvenir collection.
“The absence of a royal anniversary or event made 2014-15 a challenging [time] for retail,” according to the RCT’s latest annual report. “… Commemorative china constitutes an important part of the overall retail offer, especially for the wholesale market, and this in particular saw a reduction in sales volumes this year.”
