Getting dressed (and finding comfortable clothes) can be a challenge for kids with disabilities. But the Tommy Hilfiger brand is taking strides to change that with the launch of the first adaptive clothing line, Today.com reports.
Tommy Hilfiger created the 22-piece collection in partnership with Runway of Dreams, a nonprofit that works with the fashion industry to create adaptive, modified clothing for those living with disabilities.
If you’re familiar with Tommy Hilfiger, the items may look familiar. They are the same as the existing kids’ collection, but modified and designed for easier access and dressing.
“There are magnets down the back of the T-shirts, for example, so you can go in hands first,” Mindy Scheier, founder of Runway of Dreams, told Today.com. “Putting a shirt on over your head if you have low muscle tone or missing digits can be a very difficult task.”
On items, like tees, polos and dresses, you’ll find the magnetic back openings. What looks like a button-down shirt actually is a faux button placket with hidden magnet closure. Jeans and shorts come with adjustable waistbands, and magnets and Velcro in place of a zippered fly.
This is just the first collection on Runways of Dreams’ list.
“If you think about it, we have petite departments, plus-size departments, even pets’ clothing departments,” Scheier said to Today.com. “But we have nothing for the disabled community. I think that feels like the next natural step. It’s going to be our new normal.”
Tommy Hilfiger’s Runway of Dreams collection ranges from $18.50 to $42.50.
