Sports Marketing Lessons from Wimbledon

Yesterday, GQ reported what Roger Federer will be wearing to play in The Championships at Wimbledon: a monogrammed Nike Premier RF tennis polo and matching sweatbands, bandana, socks and shoes. All pieces are available on Nike’s website, as well as other Federer-inspired apparel. (The “Roger That” shirt is probably my favorite, because it would translate easily to the promotional apparel industry.)

The full Nike kit for Federer represents what you should be (or already are) selling to tennis programs: shirt and shorts/skirt for the game, sneakers, sweatbands for wrists and head, socks, tennis racket, tennis balls, and change of clothes for after the game. You can outfit an entire tennis team or club with the products mentioned above (and then some). Take another note from Nike and include monograms on each piece so every player knows which kit is his or hers. You can even add outerwear for athletes and uniforms for coaches to complete the promotion and encourage a long-term program.

For further tennis marketing inspiration, turn to Nike’s Maria Sharapova, Serena William and Rafael Nadal collections and watch The Championships at Wimbledon from June 24 through July 7. I am sure there will be more promotional inspiration to come.
