October is a busy month for the promotional industry. Fall promotions are in full swing, the color pink dominates, and Halloween tricks & treats cap off the festivities. But did you know that October also marks Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6-12)?
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a conflagration causing widespread devastation that claimed more than 250 lives, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. On the 40th anniversary of the blaze, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Association), decided against observing the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire with festivities, instead opting for ways to educate the public on fire prevention. Each year, Fire Prevention Week takes on a new theme—“Prevent Kitchen Fires” has been selected for 2013.
