Everyday Heroes

Today I’m going to deviate from my usual sales and marketing blog to salute the everyday heroes among us.

As I write this, the images of the horrific Boston Marathon bombing that took place yesterday are everywhere. Rather than focus on who planned this cowardly and devastating attack, I would like to focus on the amazing response of the everyday heroes we so often take for granted. From the first responders to the firefighters to the Boston police, and the doctors at Massachusetts General and the many civilians who risked their lives to help others—the fast response, competent manner and kindness of all involved was truly amazing and helped to save many lives.

Among the many heroes of the day was a civilian, Carlos Arredondo, a Costa Rican native (who is no stranger to tragedy, having lost one son in the Iraq war and another to suicide) who rushed to help victims immediately after the first blast. He was described as jumping a fence, pinching shut arteries, bandaging gaping wounds and comforting a victim to help keep him conscious before the first responders arrived.

I’ve visited Boston several times, and love the charm of one of America’s oldest and most beloved cities. As President Obama said, “Boston is a tough and resilient town and so are its people.” As we were reminded after 911, “Today there are no Republicans, no Democrats. Today, we are all Americans.” And as one of my favorite commentators, Mike Barnicle, said “Moments like this don’t show our weaknesses—they show our strengths.”
