It’s time for another fashion show roundup. This time we look at the fall fashion weeks in NYC and London (last week and this week, respectively). Overall trends include horizontal and vertical stripes, as well as adding texture to garments like fringe, raised patterns and fur.
Stripes, Texture, Psychedelic
Alice + Olivia is one of my favorite brands, because their clothing is always feminine with a dramatic flair. Stripes were definitely a big influence on this line, from mixing horizontal with vertical on a head-to-toe look, to adding drama to a fitted cocktail dress with one bold stripe. Texture was another important element, with pants, dresses, coats and even shoes that feature raised patterns, fur and chunky glitter. The third trend was psychedelic patterns that seemed to come alive as you looked at them. Alice + Olivia paired them with basics to let the patterns stand out.
Zippers and High Collars
Victoria Beckham managed to make standard patterns like stripes and muted colors very high-fashion by adding nipped in waists, high collars and knee-high boots (provided by Christian Louboutin if you can judge by the red soles). High collars and buttons were prevalent on many of the garments. Plus, collars and 3/4-length sleeves. An added embellishment to many of her dresses was a full-length zipper in the back, which added drama and a bit of sparkle.
Pops of Color
Burberry Prorsum showcased one of the lines that will be most easily translated into promotional wear. Heather and charcoal grays covered most of the garments, particularly trenches, blazers, messenger caps and pencil skirts. Another trend was a pop of color with each ensemble, whether it was a yellow belt to cinch in the waist of an oversized coat, a cream stripe on a gray coat or a green pocket on a tan purse. Burberry also brought floral to fall with large flower prints on dresses and skirts.
Tone-on-tone
There is something very country club-chic about every one of Tory Burch’s lines. She took it up a notch with a line seemingly pulled from American Girl Doll Samantha’s closet. (As an American Girl Doll enthusiast as a child, I mean that as a compliment.) Burch has a way of making fashion modest and flashy at the same time (think turtle necks and sequins). The garments were beautiful, well-crafted and featured understated tone-on-tone embellishments that make even a cream coat attention-grabbing. Tone-on-tone accents included rosettes, lace and tweed. She also made a bold use of light blue, garnet and plaid.
