Lessons from a Lobster

It’s not often we stop and think about what kinds of business lessons can be taught by Mother Nature. One of the most intriguing analogies for business growth and entrepreneurship, in my opinion, comes from the book “Grow Like a Lobster,” authored by Joshua Dick. Below are highlights from some of his key concepts – be sure to grab a copy of his book for more context.

Embrace change: Lobsters shed their shells, as they need to accommodate their growing body. Similarly, businesses must embrace change to stay relevant. Adaptability is key. Discarding outdated processes and mindsets will create space for new opportunities.

Continuous learning: As a lobster’s new shell forms, it absorbs calcium from the old shell to reinforce its structure. Fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement equips businesses with wisdom. This wisdom and learning from experiences provide a solid foundation to navigate future challenges more effectively.

Vulnerability leads to strength: When lobsters go through this transition, they become vulnerable until their new shell hardens. Similarly, businesses need to step out of their comfort zone to foster innovation, new technologies, and perspectives. This growth will strengthen their business.

Strategic timing: Lobsters only shed their shells when their current one becomes too restrictive. Similarly, businesses that expand too rapidly can overwhelm resources. Rather, strategic timing is critical and can lead to more sustainability and successful results.

Sustainable growth: Lobsters need to consume more food to support their increased size. Businesses too must ensure their growth is sustainable by effectively managing resources. Businesses should prioritize customer satisfaction and financial stability to nourish long-term success.

Shedding the past: Lobsters cannot grow within their existing shells. Similarly, businesses cannot always evolve while clinging to the past.

Nature has an extraordinary way of teaching us lessons that are applicable to various aspects of our lives. The journey of a lobster is a powerful metaphor for the growth trajectory of a business.
