There is never really a lull in this industry. Selling is constant, programs are year-long, and gathering new clients is a perennial task. But there are times when it seems like every week you are traveling to attend trade shows, visit clients or go to other industry events (like PM Power Meetings). These high-travel times leave you little reason to unpack because you will need that same suit in three days. To avoid absurd dry-cleaning costs and keep yourself looking clean and professional on work trips, try some of the packing tips below.
Color schemes
Packing one color scheme limits your ensemble and accessory choices so you cannot over-pack. (I’ll admit that even with this rule, I find ways to over-pack, but usually it’s a good rule to follow.) Pack blacks, blues, browns or tans so you don’t have to worry about bringing five pairs of shoes or different sweaters for each outfit. Simply add a bright accessory and your look will appear changed.
Reusable accessories
Lightweight, reusable accessories are the best way to get through three to seven days on the road. You can bring a belt that goes with everything–particularly helpful when it matches your color scheme. Also, try a scarf that can be worn several different ways–bonus if it is large enough to act as a blanket on the airplane. Your accessory can be an understated accent or your memorable trait (“There’s the guy with the light-up belt buckle!” or “Look, there’s scarf girl!”).
Layers
You can never trust the weather. The East Coast can be sunny in the winter and the West Coast can be chilly in the summer. Pack layers so you can prepare for all temperatures and you are not stuck in a turtleneck and wool pants in 65+ degree weather or a sundress in the snow.
