We’re just wrapping up our April issue in PM-editorial land, so office busyness is still pretty intense, but I have a few minutes of down time, so I thought I’d pop in and write up a little mini-blog for an interesting product idea that I saw on Wired.com yesterday.
The blog, Gadget Lab, posted a short write-up of these neat wooden laptop skins. I know that laptop skins aren’t an especially new concept, but here are a couple reasons why I like the ones linked on Gadget Lab a little more:
- These skins are made from real wood, not plastic with a wood-print on it. This means the skins won’t bubble and get all mangled and weird, plus you get the much nicer texture of real wood.
- The skins look really nice. You can see some designs for the more expensive “artist” series here, which look pretty cool, though I personally prefer the plainer “original” designs. I’m no expert, but I think the the skins are nice and distinct enough to make for an interesting promotional product.
- The skins are currently only available for MacBooks, which you might think is lame unless you’re like me and profoundly hate how Apple products look. In my mind, anything that can replace Apple’s crappy product aesthetic of “let’s try and make all our products look futuristic and mystical by focusing on rounded corners, cheap-looking plastic and shoe-horned minimalism” with something I can actually stomach is a godsend. (Seriously, doesn’t this look much nicer than your average Mac?)
