3 Promo Ideas From Disney’s New ’90s Retro Merch Collection

If there’s one thing people love these days, it’s anything ’90s-related. That’s why Disney has teamed up with Oh My Disney for a collection of ‘90s retro merch. At first glance, the collection is already bringing back some of our childhood memories of animated films. We can almost hear the opening commercial statement: “Coming soon to own on VHS and DVD!”

The collection includes items inspired by some of the most popular (and beloved) Disney movies of the ‘90s, such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” “Aladdin,” “Hercules,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “A Goofy Movie.” And the items themselves are all suitably retro, too. (You’ll see what we mean in a second.) It’s like a trip back in time, and we’re all for it.

Let’s take a look at a few of the products from the collection and get some promo inspiration.

1. Retractable Eight-Color Ballpoint Pens

This eight-color pen is a major throwback. It’s one of those products that you wonder why it never made it past the early 2000s, or onto our current desks at work. Thankfully, these multicolored ’90s staples are back, and we need to grab one (or a few) before they’re gone.

It goes without saying that pens are a product that everyone will always need. Although, memorable pens, like these Disney character inspired ones, stand out more than just a generic single black or blue ink one. As with all the other items in this collection, this pen leans heavily on the nostalgia factor, making it a fun and versatile item that will leave a lasting impression.

2. Aladdin Denim Jacket for Women

Denim jackets are already a hit in the world of apparel, so we welcome any and all denim into this collection with open arms. We previously covered the rise of denim and how it’s becoming a staple fashion piece. It’s no surprise that Disney followed suit and created its own version.

Something Oh My Disney did creatively was the addition of design components and flare to the jacket. The front includes Genie from “Aladdin,” while the back of the jacket, as noted on Disney’s website, “features Magic Carpet applique with embroidered details and yellow tassels.” Our one and only wish would be for Magic Carpet to actually fly us away somewhere.

This is a great example of how to add creative decoration to an otherwise plain denim jacket. The Genie patch and Magic Carpet highlighted on the jacket helps it to stand out. Denim jackets in particular offer plenty of space and a lot of decoration options, making them a blank canvas for design.

3. VHS Case Journal

What ’90s retro collection would be complete without something VHS-inspired? If there was one thing we looked forward to most, it was the weekly trips to Blockbuster to rent a VHS tape. You know, back when that was still a thing.

This VHS case, available in several movie designs, is actually a journal in disguise. It’s a great conversation-starter (people will want to know why you’re carrying a VHS tape around) and it’s a clever way to feature Disney characters that are near and dear to everyone’s heart.

One Instagram user posted, “I’m so impressed with Disney’s merch game nowadays. Just keeps getting better and better. I love it!!”

While the way we watch our old favorites might have changed since the ‘90s, the one constant is how we feel about Disney films. Whether these films are something you grew up with or something your kids watched when it first came out, there’s a sense of nostalgia that stems from this merch line. Not to mention, retro and “old-school” styles are a popular trend happening now.

This Disney collection is a great place to look for inspiration, but there are plenty of other brands going the retro route, too. Adidas is outfitting a high school football team in uniforms and gear from Adam Sandler’s “The Waterboy.” Taco Bell’s latest merchandise collection is all about the ’80s. Even Kodak, the once-great camera brand, is trying to make itself cool again through a Forever 21 apparel line that calls on its iconic logo.
