Why Evian Got a Streetwear Icon to Help Design Its New Branded, Reusable Water Bottle

Sure, some people claim that bottled water tastes different depending on what brand you buy, but in the end, water is water, right? So bottled water brands have to do a little bit more to differentiate themselves in the market. That’s at least partially the reason just announced a new project: the Evian x Virgil Abloh limited-edition Soma water bottle. The bottled water company teamed up with streetwear designer and Off-White founder Virgil Abloh, plus the water filtration company Soma, to create a unique—and very cool—reusable glass bottle. For those whose New Year’s resolution was to drink more water (or to spend less money on single-use water bottles), this could be their next purchase when it finally launches.

Evian teased the limited-edition 17 oz. reusable bottle last week with a short video snippet of all the available colors, and followed up with a video of the actual water bottle a few days later. The reusable Soma bottle features the classic Evian design along with the quote, “RAINBOW INSIDE” (which comes in four colors) against the white background. The lid is made out of natural bamboo.

While streetwear fans and Evian drinkers alike are eager to know when the collaboration will launch on the website matchesfashion.com, the date and price have yet to be announced.

The collaboration for the reusable bottle also came just in time for New York Fashion Week:

Evian is looking to make all its bottles from 100 percent recycled plastic by 2025, and it’s cool to see the brand team up with a popular fashion designer to create a branded bottle that focuses on sustainabiltiy. “By 2025 evian will become a full circular brand, making all of its plastic bottles from 100 percent recycled plastic, seeking zero plastic bottle waste,” Evian noted on its website and Instagram page.

The company also mentioned that this was the first drop of their collection, which has us curious about any future plans for designs and collaborations. With all the hype over this soon-to-be launch, we’re predicting that the limited-edition Soma water bottle will sell-out fast. The whole launch has some interesting implications for promo, as it indicates water bottles have the potential to reach must-have territory as fashion accessories. Plus, it points to increasing demand for sustainable products that look good.
