Elton John’s farewell tour is underway, and he’s not one for subtlety. Not only is his tour merchandise flashy and glamorous, it’s also very expensive.
For the UK leg of the tour, merchandise has popped up at Selfridges department stores. This includes products like silk pajamas for £1,750 ($2,186), a clutch bag for £1,825 ($2,280), a teddy bear for £330 ($412), a candle shaped like a boot for £250 ($312), a tour T-shirt for £160 ($200), and a box of chocolate truffles for £39.99 ($49.96).
The Daily Mail reported that the cheapest item is a pack of seven stickers for £6 and a pair of socks for £14.
When the tour is billed as his final lap, it creates exclusivity like no other situation. For an artist of Elton John’s stature, too, there’s clearly demand already. So, while it’s a bit startling to see price tags like that on pajamas, the singer’s business people clearly think there’s a customer base willing to spend.
Let’s just hope that the quality of the merchandise is a little better than Taylor Swift, who’s getting flack from her fans over T-shirts that fade after washing once; or Olivia Rodrigo, whose merchandise arrived to fans damaged or misspelled.
For the price fans are paying, it should at least be high quality, right?
