In recent years the eco-friendly trend has seen significant growth, and should in fact no longer be called a trend, as the need and desire for eco-friendly products and manufacturing becomes entrenched in our consumer psyche. As more and more people become aware of the impact of their purchasing habits on the environment, they are looking for products made from sustainable, recycled, and recyclable materials.
Enter Tech, stage right. When we think of technology, we don’t think eco. But we should. Eco products are gaining traction in the tech world too. From energy-monitoring smart plugs, to compostable phone cases, these products are being made from materials that are environmentally friendly, biodegradable, plant-based, and recyclable. They’re also being manufactured to be energy-efficient, minimize waste, and reduce their carbon footprint.
When shopping for tech, what should you look for?
Traceability. Are the materials used in a product certified, traceable, or otherwise documented as recycled, or plant-based? Greenwashing is all too common so it’s important that the claim for the materials can be verified.
Recycled or Recyclable. Where did the material come from? Where will it end up? It’s not just about the product in-hand. You need to consider the former and future life of a product. Look for products made from verified-recycled content, recyclable, biodegradable or plant-based materials.
Longevity. Can a product be seamlessly integrated into someone’s day-to-day life AND be built to last? Choosing a product that consumers would normally buy for themselves guarantees that it won’t be tossed or donated within a couple of months, adding immeasurable life to a product. A longer lifecycle means less product turnover, less waste, and a reduced carbon footprint.
Overall, the market for tech products made from eco materials is growing rapidly and it’s time to take a second look at what you’re offering your customers. Reduce your carbon footprint and make more sustainable choices when it comes to your technology products. Not only will you be doing your part to protect the environment, but you’ll be showing the public your commitment to green practices.
