Randy Johnson Is Making Amends With the Birds Thanks to a DirecTV Promo

Remember the time Randy Johnson killed a bird mid-air with a fastball?

Johnson, one of the most legendary pitchers in baseball history, didn’t mean to do it. Really, the bird should’ve known better than to cross the strike zone in front of the Big Unit.

But, alas, the bird did not survive. And in retirement, Johnson wants to make good with our avian friends, and is partnering with DirecTV to do it. The company is repurposing old satellite dishes to create bird-friendly miniature ballparks, which customers can win by entering a contest today. On top of that, they can also get their hands on a “Millet Mullet.”

The whole thing is part of a campaign from DirecTV to show off their dish-less capabilities, so repurposing the dish makes sense for the campaign.

And, of course, tying it back to Johnson’s hairstyle from his early playing days is a nice touch, too.

Bird lovers and baseball lovers alike can appreciate this promotion. But, it’s one that requires people to enter the contest. Maybe someday down the road we’ll all enjoy having bird ballparks in our yards just like we do with bird baths.

And, it’s nice for Johnson, who’s spent his post-playing days building quite an impressive portfolio of wildlife photography, to extend an olive branch (or millet mullet) and show that he never meant any harm to the birds.

Unless he was pitching against the Cardinals, Blue Jays, or Orioles, that is.
