The ESPN Sport Science Newton Award recipients earned their awards created by Chicago-based R.S. Owens in an unusual way—as the record-setting winners of scientific analysis of thousands of moments, plays and performances.
Skateboarder Tom Schaar won his “Outstanding New Limit” Newton Award for his Big Air performance at X Games. Each recipient reached new heights in their particular field to win the ESPN Sport Science Newton Award on the televised show hosted by John Brenkus, which aired on ESPN.
The trophy is as amazing as the athletes who took it home. Standing 15.5″ tall, the Newton tops the scales at a hefty 16 lbs., 9 oz. Its focal point is a 24 karat gold-plated apple, evoking Newton’s legendary “eureka” moment when he first recognized the universal force of gravity. The intricate surface of the apple is infused with textures of the balls of various sports such as football, baseball, basketball and soccer.
The apple is mounted to a multi-tier gold plated base seated over six black columns, creating a Grecian temple effect with an etched plate of the ESPN logo inside.
The R.S. Owens design team collaborated closely with the client to create the best way to manufacture the award concept. The completed award is assembled from 37 hand-made-in-America components and shows how R.S. Owens can take a customer’s vision and turn it into stunning 3-D reality.
