Under Armour debuted its first line of U.S.-made apparel yesterday. The first line, included in a collection called Arris Project, includes 2,000 units—leggings and bras.
According to Fortune, Under Armour has committed to creating more apparel at its UA Lighthouse facility in Baltimore. The company hopes that local manufacturing will help it meet tighter deadlines for its customer base, allowing it to compete with companies that source internationally.
“We call [it] local-for-local manufacturing,” Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank said at CES, according to Fortune. “Because if we are going to do that, we should bring jobs back—not just to America—but tightening our supply chains around the world.”
At that same event, Plank detailed his desire to bring more technology into his company’s apparel products.
Under Armour isn’t the only company looking to do more in the U.S. Adidas said that it plans to build a production factory that would focus on running footwear, and would be fully functional in the second half of this year. Also, Reebok plans to bring in more manufacturing business to the U.S. with a new lab that focuses on liquid material and 3-D drawing.
