Columbus Dispatch Scraps Crying Sidney Crosby Promo

There are few players in the NHL, or sports for that matter, as polarizing as Sidney Crosby. The Pittsburgh Penguins prodigy, to some, is the second coming of Wayne Gretzky or, more fittingly, Mario Lemieux. To others (especially Washington Capitals or Philadelphia Flyers fans) he’s a whiny, overrated brat with bad facial hair. (Those are their words, not ours.)

We now can add Columbus Blue Jackets fans, namely the staff of The Columbus Dispatch, to the latter camp. The publication planned to distribute masks depicting a crying cartoon Crosby in yesterday’s paper before the Blue Jackets playoff game against the Penguins, but ended up scrapping it.

The publication reportedly received criticism from other hockey fans.

“We heard the response and we are not going to print it,” Columbus Dispatch editor Allan Miller said, according to Sporting News. “We appreciate the input from hockey fans.”

What do you think? Was this promotion in poor taste, or all in the spirit of competition?
