$2 Million in Hat Sales? PGA Championship Branded Merchandise Expected to Sell Big

The PGA Championship is marking two milestones today through Sunday as the tour takes to Missouri’s Bellerive Country Club. This edition will mark the last time the tournament will serve as the final major competition of the year, with the showdown set to move to May next season, making it the second big test for the pros. The gathering also marks the 100th staging of the prestigious event, and spectators certainly want for the four-day stretch to be legendary. But their yearning is not limited to wanting to see their favorite golfers finish far below par, as the tournament’s merchandise shop is primed to sell gobs of garb, including more than $2 million in expected headwear sales.

Organizers are helping Missouri live up to its distinction as the Show Me State by providing branded goods galore, with the PGA Championship merchandise tent checking in at a mammoth 46,800 sq. ft. Being golf enthusiasts, we here at Promo Marketing are kicking ourselves for not having planned a vacation to Town and Country, the suburb that is hosting the pageant. Those attending the event, though, will likely serve as more than just bystanders, as tournament organizers are banking on a big turnout at the merch tent.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say we’re hoping it will be the best PGA Championship ever,” PGA Tour senior director of merchandising and licensing Mike Quirk said regarding his employer’s marketing clout.

Since the shop will include shirts that many of the players will be wearing, we’re hoping consumers can purchase some of the items we addressed yesterday, particularly the ombre look that Jordan Spieth, who would complete the career Grand Slam if he were to win the whole shebang, will be rocking. Apparel and headwear will probably prove the biggest sellers, especially since many offerings have received the co-branding treatment thanks to various athletic teams based in Missouri, but the anniversary celebration will essentially make any product a hot buy. We’d love to get our hands on some glassware so we can toast the victor in absentia, but we certainly wouldn’t mind having a role in revolutionizing Christmas-related tie purchases by making a colorful neckwear purchase from the space.

As it stands now, unless something unexpected occurs, we will be relegated to watching the action from Philadelphia, giving us athletic- and merchandise-fueled envy of those in attendance. It’s moments like these, though, that we are extra thankful for online shopping. Enjoy the action, all!
