5 Lunar New Year Products to Celebrate the Year of the Tiger

Happy Lunar New Year! We hope everyone is excited about 2022 being the year of the tiger. Specifally, it’s the year of the water tiger, which, according to History Channel, happens every 60 years, and represents strength, clearing away evil and bravery. That sounds nice!

February sort of falls during a holiday lull. There’s Valentine’s Day, but not everyone feels like getting gushy and romantic. So, Lunar New Year presents brands with another way to create themed products without having to rely on ol’ Cupid.

So we took a little look around to see what brands are celebrating the year of the tiger with merchandise, and decided on five that stood out the most for their creativity, effectiveness and festive nature.

1. Starbucks’ Lunar New Year Collection

Starbucks is pretty well-known for its holiday spirit. People look forward to those December holiday cups all year-round, and certain promos have gone viral in places like Korea.

The Starbucks Lunar New Year collection features 20 pieces, including mugs, coin banks, ceramic tigers holding mini Starbucks cups, tumblers, teapots, snow globes and more. Right now, the products are only available in stores in Hong Kong and Macau, according to Hype Bae.

2. Brooklyn Nets x Phillip Lim Collaboration

We’re pretty staunch Sixers fans over here at PPM, but we still have to respect the Nets’ collaboration with fashion designer Phillip Lim for the Lunar New Year.

“Connecting with the Nets over our shared values of community and culture, and turning it into a celebration, felt very natural to us,” Lim told NBA.com. “It is about coming together as one and venturing into the year of the Tiger, fiercely united.”

The Nets also did a promotion with Panda Express, including print material in special red envelopes that contained a QR code for prizes.

3. Disney’s Collection

You didn’t seriously think the most magical place on Earth wouldn’t celebrate the year of the tiger, did you? It might perpetually be the year of the mouse down in Florida, but that didn’t stop Disney from cranking out items like mouse-ear headbands, plush dolls, apparel and more.

4. Vancouver Canucks Jerseys

Vancouver has a large population of Asian immigrants, so it’s cool that their hometown hockey team paid homage through extremely sick jerseys.

The special edition jersey takes the famous whale design and incorporates a tiger, as well as a red-and-gold color pattern. It was designed by Up Studios animation director Trevor Lai, who said he hopes the design helps spark conversations around anti-Asian violence.

“I came up with the idea of a tiger jumping out of water because normally the orca is breaking through ice,” Lai told CBC News. “I thought what we are trying to push as a message is change. Because obviously, in addition to celebrating Lunar New Year, we’re really trying to bring awareness to all of the increased inclusivity and anti-Asian activities and messages that we want to change.”

The team will wear them as warm-ups in their game tonight.

5. Special Edition Xbox Consoles

Video game consoles have a roughly 10-year lifespan, meaning that it won’t become outdated by some new console for about a decade. It’s a bold move to commemorate a console for one particular year, but it’s also hard to argue with Microsoft’s decision after seeing this special Xbox Series S console and controller.

It’s a collaboration with artist Bu2ma, and Microsoft is calling it the “Luckiest Xox Series S,” according to Cog Connected.
