A24 Created 150 Real Swords as ‘Green Knight’ Promos (and Sold Out Immediately)

According to legend, King Arthur receives Excalibur by pulling it from the stone, proving that he is the rightful king of England. In A24’s “The Green Knight,” Gawain is given Excalibur by the king himself to engage in combat with the Green Knight of the movie’s title.

In real life, you can get the sword for $450. Or, you could have, if you acted in time. They sold out pretty much immediately on the A24 store, which we’ve covered in the past for pretty much being the gold standard for movie merchandise.

A24 got pretty creative in its promotion for “The Green Knight,” first creating an actual, playable tabletop role-playing game based on the plot of the movie.

The film distributor sold 150 swords, which were made in partnership with Online Ceramics. According to the web store, the 42” sword has a stainless steel body, debossed detailing featuring the movie’s title and “A24” on the blade, and copper hardware. It also comes with a faux-leather sheath with “Prove thy worth, or off with thy head” debossed text. The whole thing comes in a custom case with green lining (because branding).

If you’ve seen the movie, you know that the sword was given to Gawain on Christmas when the Green Knight interrupted the party to challenge one of Arthur’s knights to a challenge. Considering A24 got this promo going in October, movie fans will have plenty of time to practice before December rolls around and an immortal knight made of trees (or whatever) comes in demanding someone try to strike him.

Otherwise, it’s an awesome collector’s item for movie fans and medieval weapon buffs alike.

They say the pen is mightier than the sword. But, in this case, a promotional pen just doesn’t hit quite like a real sword does.
