Actually, Avocados From Mexico Won the Super Bowl With This Genius Ad Centered on Branded Merch

Avocados are a precious gift from Mother Nature and we should celebrate them every chance we get. Avocados From Mexico understands its audience and their devotion to avocados, and debuted an ad during the Super Bowl showcasing some Home Shopping Network-type branded merch with a little help from Molly Ringwald.

When I saw this commercial, my first instinct was to ignore all of my friends in the room and bury myself in my phone to see if any of these products are real.

Here, friends, are the fruits of my labor. (That’s a hilarious joke because avocados are technically berries.)There’s a whole site set up for the Avocados From Mexico Shopping Network, and some of those items, like the pool floatie, baby carrier, avocado track suit and more, are real.

You can’t just buy them, as our good pal Molly Ringwald led us to believe, but you can win them. All you have to do is share the product on Twitter for the chance to win. Basically, if you are up for providing AFM some free guerrilla marketing on social media, you might get hooked up with a Plush Avocado Neck Pillow, or this tiara:

Other items look like they’re just there to fill out the AFM Shopping Network website, but at least were made once as prototypes, like the Luxury Avocado Getaway Yurt, Miniature Avocado Car Seat or Avocado Music Box.

If you’re not trying to go too out-there with your avocado products, there are more traditional things you can win. The same rules apply, just share on Twitter or retweet AFM on Twitter, and you can win things like backpacks, travel tumblers, umbrellas, beach blankets and even a camera. All of these are avocado-themed, of course.

This is a promotional campaign that really checked every box:

  • Advertise a product I actually want
  • Get my attention during the Super Bowl
  • Include a very convincing web component to complement the commercial
  • Create a promotional tie-in with creative physical products
  • Get me to share their stuff on Twitter in the hopes of winning a portrait of an avocado

No one has to sell me on avocados. I am fully committed to Team ‘Cado. I’m carrying that banner for life, baby. But, the fact that AFM got me to start doing some research on whether its advertised products were real and started thinking about avocados, despite being full to bursting at a Super Bowl party, shows how effective this promotional campaign really was.

It’s going to be even longer-lasting due to the creativity behind these products. Everyone is going to want to show off their avocado carrier if they are lucky enough to get one. That’s even more advertising for AFM. And, if they don’t win, AFM already got them to tweet on their behalf anyway.
