Alabama Couple Invents Face Mask That Prevents Foggy Glasses

Wearing a mask is vital for protecitng yourself and others from the spread of COVID-19. Health experts are pretty much unanimous on that front. And there are all kinds of face coverings, some more effective than others. But the bottom line is that you should be wearing something when you go out in public.

But, for people with glasses, this has been a foggier time than usual. If you wear glasses, you’re probably reading this and nodding your head (that is, as long as you’re not wearing a mask and fogging your glasses up).

The fog problem was something a Birmingham, Ala., company wanted to put a stop to, so they invented a new type of facial covering called SLEEVZ.

Basically, it’s just a regular face covering like you’ve seen before, only it uses magnets to prevent eyeglass fog.

“Aside from the anti-fog benefit, our mask is also designed for unmatched comfort and breathability,” Julie Bernstein, one of the creators, told the Birmingham Business Journal. “We realized wearing a mask all day can be uncomfortable, difficult to breathe, and the extra pressure on ears and face is annoying, so we set out to design a mask that helps those out that are in industries where they have to wear a mask for a long period of time.”

The creators are looking to raise $5,000 to increase production, and have already received global financial support for the products.

“The fact it is a very unique design and tends to stand out from the crowd is very helpful from a marketing point of view,” Bernstein said. “My husband and I have been wearing our masks out in public over the last month, and every time we are out, someone stops us to ask where we got our mask, and is always blown away by the versatility when it comes to the one-of-a-kind built in magnets that allow for a quick transition from a face covering to a face mask.”

The creators have a patent pending for SLEEVZ, and are currently talking with local businesses about supplying the products to employees. They hope to expand into the medical field eventually, too.

The issue is that new information comes out almost daily about the effectiveness of some facial coverings. Like we said up top, not all face coverings were created equally. It will take some more time to see if items like SLEEVZ properly mitigate the spread of airborne pathogens through aerosols, but if it works, it would be a great resource for bespectacled users.
