Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety Names New Chief Safety Officer

The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety—a group comprised of 28 global apparel brands that is committed to improving Bangladesh factory conditions—announced last week that safety expert Mark Chubb would become the alliance’s new chief safety officer.

Chubb, a certified chief fire officer, and fire service health and safety officer, will oversee fire safety operations, and training and guide remediation efforts in factories from which alliance members source.

“Mark will ensure that the alliance continues to bring world-class expertise to factory remediation and fire safety programs for Bangladesh garment workers,” Ellen Tauscher, the alliance’s independent chair, said. “His role as an advisor will be critical to factories from which the alliance sources, as they ensure compliance with our strict standards.”

With more than 30 years of experience in fire safety and emergency management, Chubb, who will be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has held leadership positions in public safety, firefighting and emergency management across the United States as well as in New Zealand. Most recently, he has served as president to the USA Branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers in Seattle and fire chief of King County Fire District No. 20. Chubb has a bachelor’s in fire science and urban studies from the University of Maryland and a master’s in policy, strategy and local government from Victoria University in New Zealand.
