Amazon Buying American Apparel Could Boost its Favor with Trump

Amazon LogoQuite possibly the biggest talking point during President-elect Trump’s campaign was maintaining domestic manufacturing and bringing jobs back to the U.S.

So, with the news we reported last week that Amazon possibly is tossing its hat into the ring to acquire the now-bankrupt American Apparel, this would be a good move for Amazon to score some favor with the incoming president.

Though, as The New York Times reported, this “Trump card” wouldn’t be the only reason Amazon would be smart to acquire the Los Angeles-based company:

This would not be the main reason for Amazon to pounce on American Apparel, whose brand proudly emphasizes that it makes all its clothing in a Los Angeles factory employing 4,500 people. The business would be a natural fit with the Amazon in-house fashion offerings that started last year, and with earlier acquisitions like Shopbop and Zappos.

Though Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos certainly has the president’s opinions in the back of his mind. Trump singled out Amazon during his campaign, criticizing its antitrust issues. Bezos also owns The Washington Post, which is one of Trump’s main targets for media criticism.

For Amazon to add a well-established brand that boasts domestic manufacturing would be a good thing for Bezos and Amazon as a whole.
