Why This ‘Give a Damn’ Tote Bag Had a Waiting List in the Hundreds

Fashion labels MZ Wallace and Lingua Franca have teamed up to create a tote bag imploring folks to “give a damn”—a sentiment shared by many women in America right now. The bag, which is in such high demand that the wait list reached the hundreds before it was even released, according to Fast Company, was created to “[express] how we feel about the current moment, and [encourage] women to get involved in any way they choose,” said MZ Wallace co-founder Lucy Wallace Eustice.

While they don’t directly benefit any political party or ideology, the $235 bags do serve as more than a battle cry for women. All proceeds from the bag’s sale will go to She Should Run, a bipartisan organization that works to encourage women to run for public office.

It’s not just the cause that’s making the bag such a hit. Eustice said the bag itself is one of the brand’s most popular designs, the Metro Tote. And the decoration—the “give a damn” message written across the bag’s side in a large, script font—really pops while still looking refined. Clearly, it’s been a hit with buyers.

Fast Company writes that the bag is “designed to be eminently pragmatic with its lightweight, stain-resistant fabric.” So, basically, it can be a statement piece or an everyday tote.

“We’re obsessed with designing products that really fit into women’s lives,” she said. “So with this partnership, we wanted to make something that women would actually use.”

Not only will they use it, as evidenced by the breathtaking demand, but they’ll benefit a good cause, too.
