Tropical cyclone Vardah struck the city of Chennai, India, on Monday, leaving more than 10 people dead and causing destruction in the major manufacturing city in Eastern India.
The storm uprooted more than 10,000 trees, according to The Hindu, damaging roads, railway networks, and electricity and telecommunication infrastructure.

“It appears that the power system has borne the brunt of nature’s fury,” K. Satyagopal, principal secretary and commissioner of the Revenue Administration, told The Hindu.
According to CNN, Chennai is the second-largest financial hub in India after Mumbai. In addition to the damage to the city’s transportation and electrical infrastructure, the cyclone could leave a lasting impact on India’s agricultural sector—namely bananas, papaya groves and rice paddies.
