QR codes are a good way to promote customer engagement in the digital era. But, aesthetically, a QR code could use improvement. That’s just what Huhtamaki has done on its Monaco Cup. The single-use paper cup, which is available at Shell service stations, restaurants and cafes in Finland, has a QR code hidden under heat-sensitive printing on the cup.

Here’s how it works: The heat-sensitive printing keeps the code invisible until the cup is in use, which guards the promotional code until the customer actually purchases the item, whether it’s a coffee or any other hot drink. When hot liquid is poured in, the heat activates the printing on the label, revealing the code, according to the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association.

This is a good way to pique customers’ interest, and ensure that end-buyers are doing business as a direct result of a product.
