Gill Studios Inc., Lenexa, Kan., has announced its acquisition of Barton Nelson’s assets. Barton Nelson, a former supplier, shut down in June after 53 years in business.
With Barton Nelson’s assists, Gill has developed a new company, Gill Bebco LLC, which will resume operations at the former Barton Nelson headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., about 10 miles from Gill. Gill Bebco LLC will be marketed as the Bebco Line, which will include sticky notes, scratch pads and related items.
“The possibility that we might make this acquisition arose quickly and unexpectedly,” Mark Gilman, board chairman of Gill Studios, said. “We are glad we were able to respond to the opportunity in a timely manner.”
Barton closed unexpectedly and without notice. The company at the time blamed the shutdown on its lenders, indicating that it couldn’t even process current orders. Weeks after its closure, employees were still owed back wages.
While currently rebuilding the operation, Gill Bebco will notify distributors when it will be officially open for business.
“We are pleased that we were able to acquire these assets and enter into the sticky note business,” Paul Lage, CEO of Gill Studios, said. “It is a natural fit with our printing and adhesive expertise. Our goal is to quickly get the new business up and running soon, and we will do it in stages to insure we are putting out the best product possible. Our first objective is to get previous associates rehired to preserve the expertise and manufacturing knowledge they possess.”
