McDonald’s Sweden is trying something new with its Happy Meal boxes: virtual reality headsets. According to Adweek, the promotion is connected to the Swedish “Sportlov” holiday, when many families hit the slopes for a week of skiing.
The virtual reality viewers, named Happy Goggles, will be available to Swedish patrons over the weekends of March 5 and March 12 for about $4.10. McDonald’s will be pairing the headset with a skiing virtual reality game, called “Slope Stars.” DDB Stockholm manufactured the headset packaging, and North Kingdom Stockholm created the game.
Using a smartphone, customers just need to tear the goggles along the perforated lines and fold, similar to Google Cardboard.
“Parents can learn more about their children’s knowledge and experience of the digital world,” said Jeff Jackett, marketing director at McDonald’s Sweden, according to Adweek. “And purposeful gaming can also be a great joint activity that helps families interact on equal terms.”
