A school in Michigan banned and then unbanned (and apologized for banning) American flag apparel in school. This week, parents of students at Roseville High School outside of Detroit received an email detailing the school’s dress code, which included “U.S. Flag” on the list of prohibited items, along with slippers, inappropriate imagery, see-through clothing and spaghetti straps.
School officials said in a post on Facebook that the inclusion of the U.S. flag in that list was made in error, and that it was supposed to say, “Flags shall not be worn in demeaning manner,” according to WSB-TV in Atlanta.
The statement reads:
An informational packet was mailed out this week with an error. We apologize for the incorrect statement that was in reference to the U.S. Flag. The statement that was published should have specified that the flag should not be worn in a demeaning manner. Roseville has a long history of working with the VFW and other patriotic groups. We would never ban the appropriate display of the American flag.
School dress codes can be hot topics, such as when students at a D.C. school decided to outlaw Washington Redskins apparel, or when two students had their yearbook photos changed after wearing Donald Trump shirts.
