New Balance Releases New York MTA-Branded Sneakers

New Balance is releasing a special edition 920 shoe with the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) logo embroidered on the back.

Inspired by the New York subway, the shoe has a gray and white color scheme, reminiscent of the metal trains and concrete platforms.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen public transit celebrated on products. In 2015, Toronto hoped to raise some funds using Toronto Transit Commission merchandise. And within the last three years, we’ve seen the MTA collaborate with television shows like “Star Trek,” and musical icons like Aretha Franklin and David Bowie for branded Metrocards and signage.

Maybe it’s that environmentally conscious and increasingly urban younger generations are so into public transportation. In the past, there might not have been such a market for products related to mass transit.

But, right now, there’s a good market for people wanting to show local pride and celebrate their city’s infrastructure. Hopefully, these branded shoes at least go over better than the D.C. Metro’s merchandise store, anyway.
