Not Yet, Cleveland: Bud Light Rules Browns Tie Not Enough to Open Promotional Beer Fridges

Yesterday’s week one NFL action yielded a few amazing plotlines, including Kurt Cousins’ debut with the Minnesota Vikings, Andrew Luck’s return from injury for the Indianapolis Colts and Aaron Rodgers’ amazing effort to lead the Green Bay Packers to an unlikely comeback win over the Chicago Bears. The Cleveland Browns also caught a share of the nation’s attention, as they looked to end a 17-game losing streak against the Pittsburgh Steelers and to give their fans the chance not only to revel in a rare win but also to enjoy free beer courtesy of Bud Light’s beer fridges set to open when the Browns won their first game.

Despite a valiant effort, the home team could not conquer their division foe, with a blocked field goal in overtime sealing a 21-21 tie. In going from supporting a team with a losing streak to one with a winless stretch, many fans had hoped the beer bigwig would unlock the victory fridges it had placed in and around Cleveland watering holes, but Bud Light reiterated that the circumstances surrounding its promotion are unequivocal:

It is sad to note that Cleveland fans’ suffering has become so ingrained in their identity that they would think a moral triumph against their vaunted adversaries would count as an on-field triumph and merit a cold one on Bud Light:

For their week two contest, the Browns will travel to New Orleans, where they will face a Saints team that will surely be upset over having yielded 48 points to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In other words, the visitors can expect an incredibly tough contest, and their fans, already having tasted the free beer in their minds, might find it quite rough to see their suds-soaked dreams come true.
