Souvenir cups sold at a Notre Dame game over the weekend featured an embarrassing typo in the team’s nickname. The 50 oz. soda cups, sold at Notre Dame Stadium for $8 during the team’s Aug. 31 game against Temple University, featured the incorrectly printed phrase “FIGTHING IRISH” along the top.
Photos and comments on the typo immediately appeared online, with posts on Facebook and Twitter mocking the mistake. The university quickly responded, apologizing for the misspelling and pointing out that the typo only appeared on its 50 oz. cups, while the more popular 32 oz. cups had the name correctly printed as “FIGHTING IRISH.”
Dennis Brown, a spokesman for Notre Dame, told ESPN that the school would be ordering new, corrected cups immediately. “The solution is to correct them, which we will do,” Brown said. “It was an unfortunate mistake.”
The new cups are expected to be available by Notre Dame’s next home game on Sept. 21. The Fig Thing Irish’s next game has yet to be scheduled.
