We’re not sure what it takes for Pantone to dedicate a color to you, but we can tell you this: It’s not easy. In fact, we can’t honestly think of another time this has happened, but Prince was definitely a man who set precedents, so this is not surprising. According to CNN, the Pantone Color Institute unveiled a new purple shade on Monday dedicated to the late artist.
Love Symbol #2, created together with Prince’s estate, draws inspirations from Prince’s custom-made Yamaha purple piano.
“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be,” Troy Carter, entertainment advisor to Prince’s estate, said in a statement. “This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever.”
Lauri Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said it was an honor to help develop Prince’s custom shade.
“A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style,” she said. “Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”
From his clothing to “Purple Rain,” it’s no secret that purple encapsulated the singer. We love the way Pantone paid tribute to Prince, and who knows? Maybe this color will be the must-have shade for Fall 2017.
