R.S. Owens, Chicago, manufactured the award for the inaugural Julia Child Award. The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts announced the selection of Jacques Pepin, renowned chef, cookbook author and television personality, to receive the award.
The announcement was made from Julia Child’s actual kitchen, on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The award for the individual who has made the most profound and significant difference in the way the U.S. cooks, eats and drinks will be given to Chef Pepin at a Smithsonian Gala on Oct. 22.
The award was created from a contest winner’s design, which features the contour of Julia Child’s beloved copper pan replicated in aluminum. The thick, solid metal construction makes a unique, freestanding award from the cooking-utensil design. The metal handle was milled and then electroplated in matte black nickel, while the actual “award pan” was electroplated in copper.
The dark handle was attached to the base with copper-plated screw accents to add creative detailing to the smooth surface. The final touch is the recipient information, deep-etched on the front surface and then oxidized to give a rich texture to the imprint.
