Sportsman Cap Network, based in Shawnee, Kan., announced today that the company is changing its name to better represent the company’s product line. The 75-year-old company has added bags, backpacks and totes to its collection, and will now be called Sportsman Cap & Bag.
“When it comes to bags, we’re all in, and our name needs to reflect that,” said Dan Saferstein of Sportsman Cap & Bag. “We are the one-stop shop for both promotional headwear and bags.”
The new name becomes official with the September release of the 2013 catalog. The anticipated book will have an extensive collection of bags to go with hundreds of hat styles.
Sportsman Cap & Bag is the fourth name for the family run company. It was founded New Year’s Day 1937 as Pioneer Cap Company, when Abe Yeddis borrowed $5,000 from his father to purchase the Kansas City plant property and hat making equipment from his defunct employer.
Becoming an importer in the 1970s, the name was changed to Promotional Headwear International. After Yeddis’ grandson Dan Saferstein joined the business in the 1990s, the company assembled an unmatched cooperative of suppliers and became Sportsman Cap Network.
“Staying competitive in the apparel industry requires vision and adaptability,” Saferstein said. “My grandfather wasn’t afraid of change. I can’t be either.”
The 2012 catalog included an initial bag lineup of five brands and nine styles. The 2013 catalog will include 57 bag styles with 165 skus from brands including Puma, Taylormade, Adidas, Champion, Hurley, Alternative, Hyp, Bella+Canvas, Econscious, KC Baps, Kati and Valubag.
The bag manufacturers include many of the companies already supplying headwear to Sportsman Cap Network. The upcoming catalog will include 27 brands of caps and bags, more than 300 styles.
