First Totes, Now Tumblers: Promotional Selena Drinkware Latest to Sell Out for Texas Stores

Though she lost her life in 1995, it’s safe to say that Selena’s star has never lost its luster, that her light has never once gone out. An icon of Tejana music, and a symbol of success and artistry for Mexican Americans of all ages, Selena has endured in hearts and minds, on radio waves and TV screens, and also on a range of promotional products and collectibles.

Last month, we reported on the craze that followed the release of a Selena-branded tote bag by HEB, a San Antonio-based chain of grocery stores. All it took was a $2 tote featuring the singer’s name and likeness, and the brand saw lines stretching onto sidewalks, a sellout that took mere hours and crashed its website.

While some fans were most certainly unable to get their hands on a tote, it looks like they had another chance to collect Selena merchandise last week in Houston.

Stripes, a Houston-based convenience store brand, has released a limited edition Selena-branded tumbler. The cups, which went on sale for $2.99 in stores, were limited to four per customer, and they quickly sold out. This was no surprise to those who lined up at store locations at 3 a.m. the day of the release. It turns out their effort may have been worth the trouble of waiting, as there are some items on sale for up to $100 now on eBay. Talk about a markup!

This promotion wasn’t the first of its kind for Stripes, which has sold Selena cups in the past. This time around, however, was significant in that the singer’s sister Suzette helped to create the new cup’s design.

As was the case with the HEB totes, the proceeds from this sale will go to the Selena Foundation, a memorial organization that works to provide educational opportunities and activities to children in underserved communities.
